International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

First celebrated at the end of February 1909 by the Socialist Party of America, it changed to 8 March in 1917 after a demonstration by female textile workers in Russia. This day marked the start of the Russian Revolution and began the process of ensuring women were given equal rights.

Each year has a theme associated with it, with the 2017 theme being #BeBoldForChange. This year, we are reminded that while discussions and talks are good for bringing the plight of women around the world into the light, without actual change and implementation of policies by role players around the world, all the talk is meaningless.

While women in South Africa enjoy more rights than other women in different parts of the world, there still exists gaps between the genders that need to be filled and practices against women that need to be stamped out.

Mahatma Gandhi said “Be the change you want to see in the world’. Whether we are men or women, we need to stand together to ensure that everyone is treated equally with dignity, integrity and respect.

We at Learning Cubed wish everyone a great International Women’s Day!
