Freedom Day commemorates the day that the first free and fair democratic elections were held in South Africa back in 1994. Over 85% of people eligible to vote cast their ballot over a 3 day process that saw the ANC take control of the country with the late Nelson Mandela as president.
Today we are reminded of the sacrifice that many South Africans made in order to create a country and constitution that ranks among the best in the world. Today, of all days, it is important to remember that we need to stand resilient in the face of racism, inequality and corruption in order to preserve the rights embodied in our constitution.
