Human Rights Day is celebrated throughout South Africa on the 21st of March annually, with March also being observed as Human Rights Month.

The day and month mark a turning point in the apartheid struggle, when protesters at Sharpville, as well as other parts of the country, rose up to decry the human rights violations at the time.

Ubuntu, in a literal sense, means humanity, but we use it to represent the idea that there is a universal bond holding us all together. Around the world, and in our country, there is still work to be done to ensure that everyone has equal rights and are respected by others. Let us remember this concept of Ubuntu, that we are all connected, and stand up against anyone that would deny someone the rights that they, as a human being, are entitled to.

Nelson Mandela said it best when he said: “To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.”

We at Learning Cubed hope that you all enjoyed Human Rights Day, and wish you all a fantastic end to Human Rights Month.
